More about the project

What is the social/environmental problem/issue that this project will address?

Lack of access to outdoor gardening/nature space for people living in the city Brighton and Hove.

Can you give us some statistics on this problem?

  • A growing body of research now shows how our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing improves when we spend time in nature.
  • Growing and eating fresh fruit and vegetables is taking positive action for your own wellbeing and contributing to the wellbeing of the planet.
  • Simple acts of gardening and sharing meals together unites us in our common humanity.
  • 96% of participants from Brighton and Hove who took part in the 2016 study by the University of Essex reported that taking part in community gardening had improved their happiness, mood or wellbeing; even a single gardening session resulted in a statistically significant increase in reported happiness.

What is your solution?

Our site is easily accessed on foot or by public transport to people living in Brighton and Hove. Gardening shared land keeps us connected to the natural world, other people and the food we eat in a relaxing way. It helps us stay physically active and creates a sense of belonging and community.

Who do we help?

Our aims: We nurture community by creating opportunities for people from all walks of life to grow, cook and eat together outdoors. We create a safe space for connections with each other and relationship with this little piece of land to grow and develop over time. We encourage and celebrate everyone’s contribution to the ongoing, collective creation of our peaceful, abundant and edible oasis. We practice an ethos of kindness with each other which extends to the land and the non-human inhabitants of PLOT 22. We strive to be sensitive to and reduce the barriers faced by people who may be marginalised or vulnerable. We model simple ways of conserving our natural resources and champion examples of ethical consumption. We inspire learning and creative skills sharing. We operate in the spirit of transparency, collaboration and fairness.
