More about the project

What is the social/environmental problem/issue that this project will address?
We want to help young people to discover the rewarding world of social enterprise. Youth unemployment is high and we believe social entrepreneurship is a viable career choice.
Can you give us some statistics on this problem?
The Office of National Statistics reports 4.2m self-employed workers in the UK, however only 5% are aged between 16-24. Other studies show only 4.8% graduates class themselves as self employed at a time where enterprise skills are needed and highly prized by employers. Firstport’s independent evaluation highlighted 16-25 yr olds represent less than 10% of those starting a social enterprise. We ran two consultation sessions and found most had never heard of “social enterprise” but were keen to learn more. Scottish Government figures puts youth unemployment at 19.9% and reports 34,700 young people aged 18-24 were on the claimant count in Dec 2012. One in 12 students are without work six months after graduating and more are taking on lower-skilled roles – those in non-graduate jobs is up by six per cent from previous years.
What is your solution?
By setting up the fund, we will encourage young budding social entrepreneurs to come forward with their idea and apply for the fund. This will hopefully be the first step in discovering a new generation of social entrepreneurs in Scotland
How will you deliver this?
We want social entrepreneurs to get behind this idea and donate to give a young person a chance to get started in the social enterprise world. Donations will be used to seed fund one young entrepreneur with an idea tackling society’s most pressing needs. The winner of the FFF will receive the Barry Ayre Award, named after our founder, at an evening reception in Edinburgh in July and will receive business support from Firstport to plan, launch and grow his/her idea.
