What is the social/environmental problem/issue that this project will address?
Lady Godiva is on a quest to find ‘the humming bird’ (Itself a symbol of determination and desire to make a positive difference). Along the way, Lady Godiva meets communities and experiences local arts, culture and heritage.
Nuneaton is within the top 10% of deprivation indicators within the country. However, the planned Godiva Awakes visit to our town has energised the community and inspired us to create a day to remember for all involved. Below is what her visit did for Coventry- now it’s our turn to raise the flag!
Can you give us some statistics on this problem?
Godiva’s homecoming was in Coventry:
Increased footfall by 35%
Advertising equivalent of £61,058
PR Value 3 National and 5 Regional £288,650
4 Prime time broadcasts on Midlands Today & ITV News
Achieved Press association so every regional newspaper in the country carried the story on their website
85% Audience came into the city centre especially for the event
35% travelled over 25 miles
71% spent up to £10 in the city and 25% spent between £10 and £25
Strong engagement from local businesses e.g. Jaguar Land Rover, Severn Trent, The Ramada Hotel
90% thought the event was good/exciting/inspiring/enjoyable and an event they would talk about.
What is your solution?
By hosting community workshops to make a dazzling display of bunting, banners and pennants we will also developing a sense of anticipation and excitement for an occasion where we can showcase to Lady Godiva what is good and positive about Nuneaton and our community.
We will use designs and ideas which reflect our local skills and heritage, but also our enthusiasm and delight at working together to make something amazing and create fantastic, huge and colourful street art display to welcome our famous guest. We will work with a whole range of local people to make a spectacle which will ‘fly the flag’ for Nuneaton and welcome Lady Godiva to our town.
How will you deliver this?
A great team of local artists will lead a series of community workshops to design and make loads of bunting, banners and pennants. We will use inspiration from medieval heraldry, local history, local emblems/imagery and our own neighbourhood. We will learn and use a range of arts and craft skills from printing, painting and applique to sewing, silk painting and even woodwork. Each Thursday from 10-1pm all are welcome to join us making massive, vibrant works of art which will bedeck the streets to greet Lady Godiva when she visits Nuneaton on July 5th 2014.
