More about the project

What is the social/environmental problem/issue that this project will address?
Afrika Tikkun work in South African townships where disease, poverty, unemployment, lack of education and lack of healthcare are common place.
Can you give us some statistics on this problem?
1 in 3 people in township communities are directly affected by HIV/AIDS and 1.5Million children are orphans. Young people face endless barriers to positive development and lifestyles. Their neighbourhoods are rife with crime, drugs and gangsterism. Teenage pregnancy is normal and 1 in 5 pregnant girls is infected with the AIDS virus.
What is your solution?
Afrika Tikkun address the needs of vulnerable children at every stage of their development as well as support their families. They take care of basic health care needs through their home based care programmes and they ensure development by engaging children and young people in their child & youth development programmes. They aim to keep children off the streets for longer by engaging them in after-school programmes and re-directing their energies into positive activities that develop their self esteem, social skills and drive and enable the to realise their potential.
How will you deliver this?
• Creches & Pre-Schools • After school programmes and homework support • Leadership development • Libraries and multimedia centres • Sports and recreation • Home based support and health care • Feeding programmes • Employment assistance programmes

Hope you go well guys - love the big target and the creativity!

Who do we help?

Afrika Tikkun has impacted the lives of over 36,000 individual children and thousands of families since they began working in these communities in 1994. Their crèches, pre-schools and after school programmes are currently reaching 3,000 children and their home based care and community outreach programmes are reaching well over 7,000 homes. Afrika Tikkun consults closely with community leaders, community-based organisations and residents to identify areas of critical need. They tailor their programmes to meet these needs and train community members to deliver them. Community ownership and participation is crucial as it leads to community ownership, acceptance and sustainability.
